DIY CENTERPIECE BURLAP CAKE

Welcome to Wedding Wednesday !   If you're like a lot of people now days, you're working on a limited budget.  That's our situation, but it doesn't mean that our parties, receptions or dinners have to look cheap or go without any decor.  DIY projects are just the solution to stay within the budget, and that's exactly what I did for the Rehearsal Dinner we hosted for our son and daughter-in-law back in June.  If you missed the post with all the details, you can see it at my last post DIY Rehearsal Dinner On a Budget  (part 1).

Today, I'll be sharing a tutorial for the faux cake I made for the centerpiece on the dessert table.

POTTERY BARN FILE

You'll never guess what  I found while shopping this past week.

A Pottery Barn File from their file system line!

In the photo below you can see it hanging on the wall with other items from the Pottery Barn system line.  It is listed for $54.  I'd say I got a great deal paying only $3.99 at Goodwill.  It's one of the items I've been wanting but never felt justified to pay $54.  I'm now the happy owner of a Pottery Barn item - yah!

THRIFTY FINDS FROM YARD SALES and A THRIFT STORE

Wow! what a great weekend for yard sales!  I knew it would be great when there were a lot of yards sales  and the first few had some great finds.  Yay!

Here are a few of my finds, most of them brand new still in original packaging.

I'm planning a room makeover converting our son's bedroom into a guest room. It makes me sad that our son moved away from home, but the room is in need of new paint making it a good time for a makeover.  These home decor items will be going into that room.  I find it so much fun to collect things for a room that will be receiving a makeover.  I start to visualise how I'll put the room together as I collect items.

A king size comforter is a rare find, so you can imagine how excited I was to find this one.  It's even in the color I wanted !

 A $2 pillow

I've been using a 9 X 13 basket that was a wedding gift 33 years ago.
To say the least it's seen better days. This 99 cents basket will be replacing it.

GOODWILL HUNTING - A LAMP MAKEOVER

We recently were on a camping vacation, enjoying sunsets on the beach in Cannon Beach Oregon.

We've been doing a few updates in our tent trailer to make it a little more our style and to feel more like home. The lighting in the trailer can be a bit poor and we thought it would be helpful to add a small lamp.   We decided to stop at Goodwill and see what we could find.  My husband and I wanted something that would go well with the interior of the trailer.  It has blue's and brown's in the decor, as you can see in the background of the photos.

Here's what we found for $1.99 and $3.99.

Our original intentions were to remove the electrical parts of the lamp and place them in the lantern.  That would be cheaper than buying a new lamp kit.

Which my husband did.....
... but sometimes things don't work out like you envisioned.  When we placed it in the lantern and added the lamp shade, it lacked color and was very bland!  Soooo.... my husband reinstalled the electrical fixture back into the original lamp.  After all that, it was time to move onto the fun part of the project.

Decorating the new lamp shade.

We collected our supplies which consisted of sand dollars, starfish, shells and rope.

I began by gluing the rope to the shade, adding clothes pins to hold it in place until the glue had set. I then added the sand dollars and starfish.  We decided not to add the shells because it looked a little busy with to many items on the shade.

Here's the finish lamp.
(Sorry about the poor photos - remember the lighting is poor in a tent trailer.)

We can now enjoy better lighting while camping in our tent trailer.
Our home away from home.

IT'S GARAGE SALE SEASON

Can you believe that the summer is half over already, and garage sale season is in full swing?  As I told you in my previous post, my summer has been crazy busy.  I've not only traveled half way across the country to see family and friends, but I've also been gone camping with a church group.  The week I was packing for camping, I also was getting ready to have a garage sale with my daughter.  Crazy I know, but it was at her house and it was the only date that worked.  I had plans to take photos of the event, but forgot my camera at home.  However, this past Saturday I did get the chance to hit a few garage sales myself.   I thought I'd share just a few of my thrifty finds with you.

I found this Eddie Bauer highchair for $20 for our daughter.  She has been looking for some time on Craigslist and Ebay where the prices started at $89 to $159.   It came with a 4 position tray with convenient holders for cups and baby food.  It also has a second clipped  tray that's removable and dishwasher safe.  The pad is removable for laundry purposes.  It's even in the dark wood finish that she wanted.  I think my little granddaughter will look so cute sitting in it.

This $2 chair will come in handy when the grand daughters are at our home.

I also found a few things for my self.  This picture/wall art was brand new, still in it's original packing for only $3.  It was the perfect find for my coffee themed kitchen/dinning area.

One can never have too many baskets, right?  Who could pass this one up for a mere 25 cents.

Have you found any great deals at garage sales this summer?

BUDGET FRIENDLY CANISTERS FOR THE KITCHEN

The work of making over my kitchen has begun.  I'm hoping to have it ready to share  with you sometime next week.  I've been gathering new items for the room over the past few months. Sometimes my friends tell me my nickname should be Mrs. Goodwill Hunting, because I'm always hunting for good used items at thrift stores such as Goodwill.  Let me show you my most recent find at Goodwill.

I found this set of canisters for $ 8.99.  The smallest canister was $10.99 and the larger $19.99 at my local Fred Meyer store.  That is a total of $ 33.62 with taxes, making it a savings of $24.63!  I'm pretty excited about this thrifty find.  Have you found any great thrifty finds lately?

THRIFT STORE FINDS FOR UNDER TEN DOLLARS

Today my husband had some pastoral visits to make, so I thought it was a great opportunity to ride to along and visit my local thrift store while he did his visits.

One thing I've found about thrift store shopping is that they are putting out new things each day, so the inventory is always changing.  Today I got a few thrifty finds for under ten dollars.

Here's what I found!

My husband has been wanting a cheese slicer for some time.  I found this marble slicer for only 99 cents!  The plates were half price for .49 cents each and the bowls 8 for one dollar. The other items will work great as accents when I make over the kitchen.

Brand new PartyLite candles - $1.99 for a set of 4.
I looked online and found a set for $14 plus shipping and handling changes. I'd say a $12+ is a pretty good savings!

I even found a set of candle holders for FREE!

They'll look pretty on our table for Easter.

VALENTINES DECORATIONS ON A BUDGET

Valentines day is fast approaching, and you might say I  have a limited budget!  So how can I decorate?  I thought it was about time to show you my decorations, and what I've done on a very limited budget.

If you follow this blog on a regular basis, then you know that I use thrift stores and garage sale finds along with clearance sale items to add decor to my home.  I also reuse items from year to year, but just in a different arrangement.  Like the fashions experts tell you.... you can use the same basic item, but by adding additional items you can change the "outfit" look entirely.   That's what I've done this year, and by adding only two "new" thrift store finds I've achieved an entirely new look.

Here's what I came up with this year.

This display in our dinning room area sits on top of the cedar cabinet that my husband built for me.

Scrabble tiles spell out "Love"

Silk rose petals placed in an apothecary jar add a touch of color along with two small red candles.  The vase with the little red hearts is my "new" 99 cent find this year.  I just placed a faux green plant I already had inside it.

A lamp bought at an after Christmas clearance sale and thrift store plate are placed on the left side of the vignette.

Moving on to the kitchen...

a LOVE sign
(my "new" $1.99 thrift store find for this year) sit on top of our refrigerator among thrift store finds from previous years.

Have you done any decorating for Valentines Day?

THRIFT STORE SHOPPING - LOVE

As you know, I love to shop thrift stores.  I find some great thrifty deals at these stores.

Here are a few of my finds from today.

Four Coffee Mugs

They're an asset to my little coffee nook in the kitchen!

I also found this cute picture to hang on the wall beside the nook.

Above it hangs a wire wall hanging purchased from a garage sale this summer.

Under the cabinet is my .25 cent coffee spoon purchased at a garage sale.

Isn't it amazing what you can purchase second hand for under ten dollars!

In my next post I'll have some great tips on
"shopping for less".

GETTING READY FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH TRHRIFY FINDS

With the holidays fast approaching, now is the perfect time to begin collecting items. Thrift stores are wonderful places to shop. You can find high end items for low prices. This morning I had the opportunity to shop at my local thrift store, and they were putting out Christmas items.

Last year I started a collection for our living room using silver and blue.

I was very happy to find more items to add to my collection. Here are a few of the things I found.

Snowflakes, icicles, ribbon and noel ornament.

I also found another mercury glass snowflake candle holder.

Last but not least napkins, they'll work great with the dishes and chargers from last year.
Have you found any great deals lately?  Have you started your holiday shopping and planning yet?
