Painting - Two Rooms in the Makeover Process

Do you ever have too many projects and not enough time in a day! That's been my past week and the reason for lack of posts from me this past week.

As I've shared with you previously, I was planning on working on our living-room makeover and this past week I also started my second bathroom makeover.

You may think I'm a little crazy to have two project going simultaneously, but since I had my paint brush out to prime the living-room walls. I thought why not prime the bathroom at the same time, which lead to the two room makeovers at the same time.

Here's a little sneak peak of the what I've started in each room.

Two of the living room walls had burgundy paint and since I'm getting rid of our old sofa with the burgundy pattern on it. I want to go for a lighter feel in the room. In prep for lighter walls I started out by priming the walls with a good coat of Kilz.

Then I marched to my back bathroom and started priming it as well, and proceeded on to the paint.

Here's my inspiration for paint color. I love the paint color that they used here at Pottery Barn.

I helped my daughter paint her half bath this color. I really liked the color and outcome of her bathroom was beautiful.

While shopping at Lowe's recently I found a color that looks similar for only $5 in the miss tinted paints. Me being a thrifty person I thought this would work out great!

Wrong...Big Mistake!!!

Why is it that paint can look such a different color in the store than on your walls? I know.....lighting has a lot to do with it, but I thought it would be fine.

Well, as you can see in the photo below it cost me more labor and money!

When I started painting it looked teal or forest green, instead of the lovely blue I envisioned. After painting a small area I ended up whipping it off the wall....
because I didn't want green!!!
I know it looks blue on your computer screen but it's not!

This will mean another trip to look for new paint, so for now I can look at the mess until I have time to work on it again.
This is a DIY lesson I've learned the hard way.

One Stop Shopping at CSN Stores

Do you enjoy shopping like I do? With the holidays fast approaching, wouldn't you love to be able to do one stop shopping from the comfort of your own home? CNS Stores has over 200 online stores where you can find everything you're looking for from wardrobes to fantastic cookware and chic lighting.

Like many of you, I don't own my own home. We live in a parsonage with very small closets ~ measuring a mere 4 foot wide by a little under 2 feet deep. If you can relate to this you'll appreciate anything that provides you with more storage solutions.

Take a look at some of the great storage pieces CNS Stores has to offer
.

These double door cabinets offer drawer storage as well.

This little cabinet would offer storage in even the smallest space in your home.

Wouldn't this be cute in a little boys bedroom?

Living Room Furniture

I've been looking for a new sofa for our living room.

Here's the sofa we have right now,
it's in good condition, but dated since it's over 12 years old.

I'm thinking of going with a neutral colored sofa.
It would be easier to change accent colors and wont date as quickly.

Here are a few of my inspirations for a sofa.

Remember my recent trip to the Pottery Barn store...
here are a few of the sofas I saw there and liked.

I also like wing-back chairs that are white or cream .

Since the room already has two wing back chairs in it.

I think I'll be reupholstering them or making some slip covers.

We have several projects going on around our home right now.

The piece of furniture my husband is making for me.

A roof for our patio and the start of a living room make over.

I'll be keeping you posted on the progress of the projects.

Wedding Wednesday

It's been a little while since I did a Wedding Wednesday post.

Some of you ask me to do some more posts. Today I'll share part I of two posts on
Wedding Cakes.

For both of our daughters' wedding's we made the cakes.
Today I'd like to share some of the photos of the cakes and next week I'll tell you how we went about making them.

The cakes were a lot of work to make,
but also a lot of fun and bonding time with our daughters.

Custom Built Furniture

Did you know that a lot of the furniture in my home is custom built?
Yes, I've been blessed to have a very talented husband who can fix almost anything from cars to fixing and building furniture.
He grew up as a carpenter's son, and over the years has developed a real talent for finishing and creating furniture. His way to unwind and relax is to work in his shop.

All I need to do is find a photo of what I would like him to build and he will make it for me.
Here's what he's made for me over the years.
The first items a cedar chest for a wedding gift to me.

The second was also a gift ~ my first Christmas as a married couple.

Shortly after the Christmas cabinet, he went to work on a crib for our first child who would be born the following October.
Sorry to say that was 30 years ago and I didn't take photos of it.
This desk I found a photo in a magazine
and he built it to fit a small space in the first parsonage we lived in.

I love all the detail on it and the inside has all these cute cubicles.

Sixteen years ago he built our bedroom furniture.

We went to high-end furniture stores to find the style we wanted. The highboy has a floating top just like the high-end store. This feature is for climate changes and can expand and contract with the weather.

This cabinet was built using white cedar lumber.
A friend milled a tree from his yard; and, in exchange for a few woodworking lessons, he gave my husband the lumber.
The painting on the doors was done by a local artist
making the piece unique to the area we live.
Other pieces of furniture that he's built me....
an oak pedestal kitchen table, headboard for our bed,
two glider rockers, entertainment center,
end tables, a coffee table and adirondack chairs for our patio.

He's started another project for me, can you guess what it is?

I'll share it with you in the near future!

Toile Curtains

Curtains and window treatments can be a very costly items for your home. Over the years I've sewed a lot of my window treatments. I've made formal curtains for my living room, bedroom and fun stenciled baseball curtains for our sons' bedroom. I wish I'd taken photos of them but those curtains have come and gone long before my blogging days.

Today I thought I'd share with you the window treatments I made for my dinning room. My inspiration came while shopping at Lowe's. They had them in their curtain display for $20 a valance. Since I would be needing three valances it would add up to over $60. I thought: "I can make them cheaper."

I took my discount coupon and headed over to Jo Ann's Fabric.
Here I could purchase the fabric for half price ~ only $10. I already had white fabric lining leftover in my sewing room from a previous project at home. I then headed over to Wal Mart, and found three tassels for 75 cents each.

Later I wished I had made one for my kitchen as well.

While shopping I came upon this valance from Country Curtains for $49 per valance.

(photo from County Curtains)
You can imagine how excited I was to find it for $2.49 at my local thrift store.

The print is a slightly different toile pattern than my dinning room curtains, but they're not right next to each other to really notice the difference.

Making my curtains a very cost saving and thrifty deal for under four dollars each.
